Sealants help protect teeth from decay by keeping food out of these grooves.
Sealants are a protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the 6 and 12 year molars. Most tooth decay in children and teens occurs on these surfaces.
The process of applying sealants is very easy and painless.
After the tooth is cleaned, an etchant gel is placed on the chewing surface for a few seconds to create a rough surface that will help the sealant bond. The tooth is then rinsed and dried. The sealant material is now painted on the chewing surface of the tooth, and a curing light is put on the tooth to help harden the sealant.
